These are uncut roses, still on the plant, and photographed at mid-day, despite the deceptive lacquerwork effect that suspends them against the dead of night. Roses naturally group themselves in these charmed bundles, which we then imitate in the vase. This series recalls a long history of representative naturalism, stretching back to 17th-century Dutch and Flemish floral still life painting.
